Ways the EDS shares data to the world
Why Share?
The Engineering Design Studio was born out of a mission to teach engineering students about design and innovation. Many of our earliest projects and coursework focused on data transmission and data sharing, so it naturally follows that we service this obsession by putting unreasonable amounts of data online and making it available to others.
What we Share and Where we Share It
- Weather Data (Currently under Maintenance). Since 2014, we have collected and shared weather data to a broad range of online databases. Unfortunately, in 2023, our hardware became unreliable, so the station has been offline as we work with the manufacturer to bring the system back online. The system is installed on the observation deck behind the faculty pool on the highline level of the NYUAD campus.
- Our Library on Libib. Since 2014, we have shared details about the books we have in our lab. We operate a non-lending/reference library, meaning you're welcome to read material in the EDS but not allowed to borrow it.
- ADSB Data. Since 2016, we have collected and shared ADS-B data received from aircraft nearby. The system is installed on the observation deck behind the faculty pool on the highline level of the NYUAD campus.
- Our Lab on Twitch. Since 2020, we have live-streamed our lab 24/7 on Twitch.
- AIS Data. Since 2023, we have collected and shared AIS data received from marine vessels nearby. The system is installed on the observation deck behind the faculty pool on the highline level of the NYUAD campus.
- Bird Song "Sightings" on BirdWeather. Since 2025, we have been sharing data about the birds on our campus, as determined by the BirdNET-go software that identifies species based on observed bird vocalizations. The system is installed on the observation deck behind the faculty pool on the highline level of the NYUAD campus.
